Why the East is different

A region that still runs on stored oil

Oil matters more here than almost anywhere else in England. At the 2021 Census, 7.2% of the region’s households relied on oil alone for heating, against 3.2% for England, and seven of the ten neighbourhoods with the highest share were in the East. Behind those homes sit farms, estates and rural businesses holding kerosene and gas oil in bulk.

Around a fifth of the region lies below mean sea level, across north Cambridgeshire, much of Norfolk and the Essex coast, and the Fens hold roughly half of England’s grade 1 farmland. On drained, low-lying ground a leak reaches ditches and drains fast, so bunding and inspection carry extra weight.

Ports, airports and distribution parks at Felixstowe, Harwich, Great Yarmouth, Stansted, Luton and along the M1 and A14 add generator, plant and vehicle fuel tanks to the mix.

  • Bulk tanks on farms
  • Gas oil and DERV at ports, depots and airports
  • Generator fuel for hospitals and science parks
  • Old single-skin tanks due for replacement

Rules & local risks

Low ground, dry summers and the 2001 Regulations

Most of the region falls within the Environment Agency’s East Anglia area; south Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire sit in its Hertfordshire & North London area. With roughly 450–750 mm of rain a year, the East is one of England’s driest regions, so its rivers and groundwater are worth protecting.

Businesses storing more than 201 litres of oil come under the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001: a bund of at least 110% capacity, sound pipework and protection from impact. We work to GPP2 guidance and OFTEC standards, and supply a Waste Transfer or Consignment Note plus a degassing certificate or Certificate of Disposal where relevant. Britteco is OFTEC registered, ISO 9001:2015 and CHAS accredited.

Questions

East of England tank questions

Do you cover the whole East of England?

Yes, all six counties, from Luton and Bedford to Cromer, Lowestoft and Southend-on-Sea. Each job is planned from Banbury so one visit covers the work.

Which regulations apply to a business oil tank here?

Above 201 litres, the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001 apply, including a bund of at least 110% capacity. We can check an existing installation against them.

Is a tank on Fenland or coastal marsh at higher risk?

Drained, low-lying land carries spilt fuel into ditches quickly, so a weeping single-skin tank there deserves early inspection and, where needed, a bunded replacement.

Can you deliver fuel in an emergency?

Yes, 24/7 including weekends, with diesel or heating oil drops such as 100, 200 or 500 litres.

Do you help homeowners as well?

Our focus is commercial, but we can also replace or install domestic oil tanks in the region. See home oil tank replacement and removal for how a domestic job runs.
