


When a commercial fuel tank leaks, the problem rarely stops at the tank. Oil tracks along pipework trenches, soaks into the surrounding ground, and can reach drains, watercourses or a neighbouring boundary before anyone notices. Britteco handles the whole sequence — stopping the release, removing the source, dealing with the contaminated ground, and documenting the waste — as one job, under one set of RAMS.
Most of the work we are called to is tank-related: a failed underground line, a corroded base, an overfill, or contamination found during a tank removal that nobody expected. Because our engineers already work on fuel storage systems every day, the same team that cleans and removes the tank also deals with what is underneath it.
No two contamination jobs look the same. What follows is the full scope we can bring to a site — a given project will use some of it, not all of it.
Stopping the release and limiting its spread: isolating the tank and pipework, bunding and absorbents, protecting gullies and drainage runs, and making the area safe to work in before anything else happens.
Draining and cleaning the tank, gas-freeing where required, and removing the failed tank or pipework. Contamination cannot be dealt with properly while the thing causing it is still in the ground.
Removal of oil-stained soil, backfill and pipework surround from around the tank and along the line runs, taken back to visibly clean material and to the depth the situation requires.

What has been released, roughly how much, how long ago, and what is nearby — drains, watercourses, boundaries, occupied buildings. This determines whether it is an emergency attendance or a planned visit.

Very few contamination jobs begin with a dramatic spill. Most are slow, quiet and only discovered when something else prompts a look — a fuel reconciliation that will not balance, a smell in a drain, a tank replacement, or a buyer's survey. By then the oil has usually had time to travel.
The most common cause we see. A buried steel line corrodes at a joint or a bend and weeps for months. Losses are small enough to be missed on paper but large enough to contaminate a long trench run.
Water sitting under a steel tank, or sludge and water inside it, eats the tank from both directions. Failure usually starts at the lowest point, where it is hardest to see.
A failed overfill alarm, a vent discharge or an uncoupled hose during delivery. The volume is often modest, but it lands on the surface and runs straight for the nearest gully.
Tanks taken out of use but never decommissioned still hold residue. Years later the shell fails and releases what is left, often onto a site that has since changed hands or changed use.
A digger bucket, a post driver or a new service trench through a buried fuel line. The loss starts immediately and often is not noticed until the tank gauge drops.
Lines cut or drain valves left open to siphon fuel. Whatever is left in the tank keeps running out long after whoever opened it has gone.
Regular tank inspections and ultrasonic thickness testing catch most of these before they become a ground contamination problem — which is always the cheaper outcome.
Once ground is contaminated with oil it stops being soil and becomes a controlled waste. How it is classified, segregated and consigned decides what it costs to deal with — and whether the paperwork stands up afterwards.
Clean arisings and contaminated arisings are kept apart from the first bucket. Mixing them turns a small quantity of hazardous waste into a very large one, and the cost follows the tonnage.
Waste is described by what it actually is, with the correct EWC code, rather than whatever is quickest to book in. A misdescribed load is the operator's problem and the producer's liability.
Hazardous waste leaves site under a consignment note naming the producer, the carrier and the receiving site. You keep a copy; so do we.
The void is filled with imported clean material and compacted in layers, so the ground is fit to carry whatever goes back on top of it.
Where the classification of the material is unclear, a sample is tested instead of guessed. Over-classifying wastes money; under-classifying creates a liability that stays with you.
Excavation is taken back to clean material and no further. Over-digging inflates the tonnage leaving site without improving the outcome for the ground.
Under the Environmental Protection Act, the business that produces the waste stays responsible for it — even after a contractor has driven it off site. That is why the documentation matters as much as the digging.
Waste is only moved by a carrier registered with the Environment Agency, and only to a site licensed to receive that waste type.

Stop the source if you can do so safely — close valves, isolate the line, stop any delivery. Keep the oil away from drains and watercourses using whatever absorbent or bunding is on site. Do not start digging. Then call us on 0800 677 1155 so the site can be assessed before the contamination spreads further. It is driven almost entirely by volume and access: how much contaminated material has to come out, how deep it sits, whether plant can reach it, what the surface has to be reinstated to, and the disposal route for the waste type involved. Two jobs on identical tanks can differ by an order of magnitude because of ground conditions alone. For that reason we quote from a site assessment rather than over the phone — but the assessment itself will tell you the realistic range quickly.
If oil has entered, or is likely to enter, a drain, a watercourse, groundwater or land beyond your boundary, it should be reported. In England and Wales that is the Environment Agency incident line; Scotland has SEPA and Northern Ireland NIEA. A spill fully contained within your own bund or hardstanding usually does not need reporting, but it does need dealing with. If you are unsure, report it — the consequences of not reporting are far worse than the call.
Oil-contaminated soil is usually classified as hazardous, which means it must be consigned, carried by a registered carrier and taken to a site licensed to accept it. The classification depends on the contaminant and its concentration, so it is confirmed for the material actually removed rather than assumed. Clean arisings from the same excavation are kept separate and dealt with as non-hazardous, which is why segregation at the dig makes such a difference to the cost.
Yes — that is the normal way we work. Draining, cleaning and gas-freeing the tank, cutting it out, excavating the contaminated ground beneath and around it, and reinstating the area are all handled by the same team as a single programme.
