Britteco cleans, installs and removes oil and fuel tanks for businesses across Hertfordshire, from Watford and Hemel Hempstead to Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City. We also pump out tanks, look after generator fuel and clear sludge from older tanks.
Hertfordshire is mostly on mains gas: just 1.65% of households heat with oil alone, according to Census 2021, rising to 5.5% in rural East Hertfordshire. Most of the oil tanks we meet here belong to businesses, schools and farms rather than homes.
The county’s employers lean on stored fuel. Airbus Defence and Space has its space and defence headquarters in Stevenage, and Warner Bros Studios Leavesden occupies a former aerodrome of about 200 acres near Watford. In the Lea Valley around Cheshunt, roughly 300 acres of glasshouses grow cucumbers, peppers and other salad crops, and the business parks in between have plenty of standby generators.
Hemel Hempstead is home to the Buncefield oil terminal, whose 2005 explosion is still remembered across the industry. For smaller sites the lesson is simple: tanks, bunds, alarms and pipework need regular checking. Much of our Hertfordshire work is cleaning, pumping and inspection, so problems are found early.

Run out of heating oil or diesel in Hertfordshire?
24/7 emergency heating oil, kerosene and diesel delivery from 100 litres, including nights, weekends and bank holidays.
Hertfordshire sits in the Environment Agency’s Hertfordshire and North London area. Its chalk rivers include the Ver, Gade, Bulbourne, Mimram, Beane, Rib, Ash and Stort, which drain to the Colne and the Lee. The Mid-Chilterns and Lee Chalk aquifers beneath them are monitored closely, so oil that soaks into the ground here can travel a long way.
Dry years make the problem worse. September 2026 brought only about 52% of normal rainfall and record soil moisture deficits for that month, and low flows give a spill less water to dilute it. Bunds that hold rainwater, weeping seams and buried pipework all deserve a closer look before winter.
Under the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001, any business storing more than 201 litres of oil needs secondary containment of at least 110%. Our engineers are OFTEC registered, we hold ISO 9001:2015 and CHAS, and we work to GPP2 guidance. You receive the full set of waste and disposal paperwork after each job.
We work throughout the county, including these towns.
Yes. We have pumped out and cleaned an underground water tank there, and we pump fuel tanks, oily water and flooded chambers across the county. The tanker takes the contents away with the right waste paperwork.
We look after the fuel side rather than the engine. That means inspecting and cleaning generator day tanks and bulk tanks, polishing stored diesel and delivering fuel. Your generator engineer can then service the set knowing the fuel is clean.
It depends on how quickly fuel is used and how much water gets in. Tanks that sit full for long periods, like standby generator tanks, build up water and sludge faster than you might expect. An inspection will tell you whether cleaning is due now or can wait.
Yes. We remove the old tank, prepare the base, fit a new bunded tank and transfer any usable fuel back in. The installation is set out to meet the 2001 Regulations and OFTEC standards.
Waste transfer or consignment notes for anything we take away, a certificate of disposal for removed tanks and a degassing certificate where needed. For inspections you get a written report with photos.
