Essex in focus

Airports, Thames ports and a long, low coastline

Essex combines heavy transport infrastructure with open farmland. Stansted and Southend airports, Harwich International Port within Freeport East, and the Thames-side ports at Tilbury and London Gateway in Thurrock all store fuel for vehicles, plant and emergency power. Distribution sites along the A12, A120 and M11 add a steady demand for diesel tanks that are clean and compliant.

Many of the requests we get from Essex involve fuel tank decommissioning. Sites change hands, boilers are converted and fleets move to new depots, leaving tanks behind that still hold fuel or vapour. Decommissioning makes them safe, with a certificate to prove it, and is often a condition of a sale or lease.

Rural Essex tells a different story from the towns. Only 4.4% of households across Greater Essex heated with oil alone in 2021, yet the share rose to 19.8% in Maldon and 16.3% in Uttlesford. Arable farms in Uttlesford, Braintree district and the Dengie peninsula keep red diesel and kerosene in bulk, and those tanks need regular oil tank cleaning to stay trouble-free.

  • Generator and vehicle fuel at airports and port terminals
  • Redundant tanks on sites being sold, let or redeveloped
  • Bulk farm tanks across Uttlesford, Braintree and Dengie
  • Steel tanks exposed to salt air near the coast
How we work in Essex

A straightforward route to a safe, certified tank

Most Essex jobs follow these four stages, whichever service you need.

  1. Initial detailsTell us what the tank held, its size and whether it is above ground, underground or inside a building. If decommissioning is linked to a sale or lease, mention any deadline.
  2. Survey and methodWe confirm how much fuel and sludge is left, how the crew will reach the tank and which method suits: cleaning, removal or foam fill. Airside and port jobs are planned around the operator’s permit system.
  3. Clean, drain and make safeThe tank is pumped out, cleaned and de-gassed, then removed, cold cut or filled. Recovered fuel and waste are taken away by licensed carriers.
  4. Certificates issuedYou receive a degassing certificate or Certificate of Disposal with the Waste Transfer or Consignment Note, ready for a solicitor, landlord or insurer.

Rules & local risks

Over 350 miles of coastline to protect

Essex falls within the Environment Agency’s East Anglia area. With more than 350 miles of coastline, much of it low saltmarsh and estuary, the county has its own Shoreline Management Plan covering Essex and South Suffolk. Fuel tanks near creeks, sea walls or tidal rivers carry a higher chance of polluting water if they fail, and salt air speeds up corrosion on steel tanks and fittings.

Commercial premises storing over 201 litres of oil must comply with the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001. That means secondary containment of at least 110% of the tank’s volume, sound pipework and fill points within the bund. GPP2 guidance sets out good practice for the rest.

When a tank is decommissioned or removed, the paperwork matters as much as the work. We supply Waste Transfer or hazardous waste Consignment Notes for everything taken off site, along with a degassing certificate or Certificate of Disposal. Britteco is OFTEC registered and ISO 9001:2015 and CHAS accredited.

Questions

Essex tank questions

Should I decommission or remove a disused tank?

Removal clears the tank from site and is usually preferred when access allows. Decommissioning in place, by cleaning, de-gassing and filling with foam, sand or concrete, suits tanks under buildings or slabs where digging out would cause damage. Either way, you get a certificate.

We are selling a commercial property with an old fuel tank. What do buyers need?

Most buyers and their solicitors want evidence that the tank is empty, clean and safe, or gone altogether. A decommissioning or disposal certificate with the waste paperwork normally satisfies them.

Does a coastal location affect our tank?

Salt air and damp conditions speed up corrosion on steel tanks, legs and fittings. Regular inspection, plus ultrasonic thickness testing on larger steel tanks, shows how much wall is left before a leak appears.

How often should a farm diesel tank be cleaned?

It depends on use and condition, but water and sludge build up over time in every tank. If filters keep blocking or you see dark water at the bottom of a sample, a clean is due.

Can you supply fuel while our tank is being cleaned?

Yes. Usable fuel can be held in temporary storage during the clean, and our 24/7 emergency delivery can drop 100, 200 or 500 litres of diesel or heating oil if you run short.
