What makes Suffolk distinct

Container cranes, sugar beet and Mid Suffolk villages

Felixstowe is the UK’s largest container port, handling around 48% of the country’s containerised trade and forming part of Freeport East. The yards, hauliers and warehouses that grow up around a port of that size along the A14 run diesel for vehicles, handling equipment and back-up power, and their tanks see heavy daily use.

Inland, Suffolk is farming country. Arable and livestock holdings keep red diesel and heating oil on site, the British Sugar factory at Bury St Edmunds processes beet from across the area, and the studs around Newmarket heat stables, offices and staff housing. At Lowestoft, the port serves the offshore energy industry.

Oil heating is widespread: 13.2% of Suffolk households used it alone in 2021. Mid Suffolk reached 30.3%, the highest of any district in the East of England, with Babergh at 19.6% and West Suffolk at 16.6%. Many of those tanks are years old and sit at the far end of a garden or yard.

  • High-throughput diesel tanks at port and A14 logistics yards
  • Red diesel and kerosene on arable and livestock farms
  • Heating oil for studs, estates and rural offices
  • Offshore support fuel storage at Lowestoft
How we work in Suffolk

Four steps, one well-planned visit

We keep the process short and plan Suffolk trips carefully so nothing is left for a second journey.

  1. Start with a call or photosDescribe the tank, its capacity, its contents and how close a vehicle can get. For busy port-side sites, tell us about permits, inductions and working hours too.
  2. Scope and scheduleWe decide together whether the tank is cleaned, made safe in place or taken away. The date is fixed around your operation, whether that is a shift pattern or a farm’s quiet weeks.
  3. On-site workRemaining fuel is decanted into temporary storage or a new tank, sludge and water are pumped out, and the old tank is lifted or cold cut. Work areas are left clean.
  4. Certificates and adviceWe provide the Waste Transfer or Consignment Note and any degassing certificate or Certificate of Disposal, plus a short note on bunding and security.

Rules & local risks

Coast, river valleys and tank security

Suffolk is covered by the Environment Agency’s East Anglia area. In the north of the county, the Waveney valley and the edge of the Broads around Beccles and Lowestoft are especially sensitive to spills, as fuel reaching a watercourse there spreads quickly through connected channels.

Any business storing more than 201 litres of oil falls under the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001. Tanks need secondary containment of at least 110% of capacity, plus protection from impact, a real risk on a busy port or haulage yard. We follow GPP2 guidance and OFTEC standards on every install.

In April 2026, Suffolk Police warned residents and businesses to secure heating oil tanks as thefts rose. Simple steps help: lockable fill caps, locked valves, lighting and a tank placed where it is overlooked. If a theft has already happened, have the tank checked before refilling, because damaged fittings can turn a loss of fuel into a pollution incident.

Questions

Suffolk tank questions

Can you work on a live port or logistics site?

Yes. We plan around site inductions, permits and traffic management, and can split the work so vehicles keep moving. Give us the site rules in advance and the crew will arrive ready to follow them.

How do I make our oil tank harder to steal from?

Fit lockable fill caps and lock the outlet valve, add lighting and keep the tank in view of the yard. Where the tank is old, a bunded replacement with built-in lockable fittings fixes security and compliance in one job.

What is diesel bug and why does it matter?

It is microbial growth that forms where water collects in diesel, leaving slime that blocks filters and stalls engines and generators. We remove the water and sludge and polish the fuel so it is fit to use again.

Will you take the old tank away after a replacement?

Yes. The old tank is drained, cleaned and removed, and any good fuel is transferred to the new tank. You receive the waste paperwork and a disposal certificate.

Is there a long wait for Suffolk jobs?

We plan Suffolk visits around other work in the region, so the lead time depends on the job. If you are without fuel in the meantime, our 24/7 emergency diesel and heating oil delivery can cover the gap.
