What drives the work here

Freight, farmland and quarries

Most of the motorway ‘golden triangle’ formed by the M1, M6 and M42 lies in the East Midlands. Distribution parks, rail freight terminals such as DIRFT at Daventry and East Midlands Gateway, and East Midlands Airport, the UK’s largest dedicated cargo airport, all run HGV diesel, plant fuel or standby generators.

The eastern half is farming country. Greater Lincolnshire grows around 30% of the nation’s vegetables, and 11.9% of Lincolnshire households heat with oil alone. Bulk gas oil and kerosene tanks on these holdings work hard through harvest and winter.

Heavier industry adds its own demand. Tunstead near Buxton is the UK’s largest limestone quarry, Corby has a Tata Steel tubes works, and Ratcliffe-on-Soar, the country’s last coal power station, closed in September 2024, leaving plant fuel, waste oil and old storage to clear.

  • Diesel and generator tanks at M1 distribution parks
  • Red diesel and kerosene on Lincolnshire and Rutland farms
  • Plant fuel and waste oil at quarries and steel works
  • Redundant tanks on industrial sites being cleared or reused

How we work in the East Midlands

From first call to signed-off paperwork

Depot, farm and quarry jobs follow the same steps, with surveys and follow-up visits booked around how your site runs.

  1. Describe the siteTell us what the tank holds, its capacity and how a vehicle reaches it. Depot and airport gate times and permits go into the plan.
  2. Survey and methodWe confirm fuel levels, access and buried lines, then set out the method and waste route. On farms we work around harvest.
  3. On-site workThe crew pumps remaining fuel into temporary bunded storage, then cleans, cuts or makes the tank safe. Cold cutting suits depots and quarries where hot work is banned.
  4. Close-outWe hand over the Waste Transfer or Consignment Note and any degassing certificate, with notes on other tanks worth inspecting.

Rules & local risks

The Trent, the Lincolnshire coast and the 2001 Regulations

The Environment Agency splits the region between its East Midlands area (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Rutland) and Lincolnshire & Northamptonshire. Parts of Nottingham sit behind a £45m flood defence scheme on the River Trent, and on the coast the 1953 storm tide flooded Lincolnshire as far inland as Alford.

Any business storing more than 201 litres of oil must meet the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001: a bund of at least 110%, protected pipework and a tank in sound condition. On flood-prone ground, check the bund is not full of rainwater.

We follow GPP2 and OFTEC practice, and leave every site with the correct Waste Transfer or Consignment Note, plus a degassing certificate or Certificate of Disposal where it applies.

Questions

East Midlands tank questions

Do you work on distribution and airport sites?

Yes. M1 depots, rail freight terminals and airport fuel stores need planned access, permits and inductions, which we arrange before the crew arrives.

Our farm tank holds red diesel and has water in it. What should we do?

Water in a gas oil tank feeds diesel bug and blocks filters, often at harvest. We pump out the tank, remove sludge and water, and polish usable fuel back into service, or advise replacement if the tank is corroded.

Is decommissioning or removal better for an old tank?

Removal clears the site and is usually preferred. Where a tank sits under a building, beside live plant or below ground, cleaning, degassing and filling it in place can be safer. Either way you receive certification.

How do you plan a job in Nottingham or elsewhere in the region?

We start from photos and tank details, survey where needed and book a date, so the crew arrives with everything required in one visit. For fuel that cannot wait, our emergency diesel and heating oil delivery runs 24/7.

Can homeowners use Britteco?

Commercial work is our focus, though we can also replace or install domestic oil tanks in the region. The details are on our domestic oil tank page.
