Why this region stands out

Energy estuary, freight hubs and upland farms

The Humber is billed as the UK’s Energy Estuary. Immingham, the country’s largest port by tonnage, has its own oil terminal, and just east of Hull, Saltend Chemicals Park makes acetic acid and ammonia beside a 1,200 MW gas-fired power station.

Inland, Drax near Selby has the highest generating capacity of any UK power station. South Yorkshire adds the iPort rail freight terminal at junction 3 of the M18 and Rotherham’s Advanced Manufacturing Park, home to Rolls-Royce, Boeing and McLaren.

Only 2.2% of households across the region heat with oil alone, but North Yorkshire reaches 11.9%, where Dales farms and estates depend on stored kerosene and red diesel.

  • Bulk storage at Humber ports and chemical sites
  • Generator and fleet diesel at rail-linked logistics parks
  • Gas oil and heating oil on North Yorkshire farms and estates
  • Large diesel tanks moved when a site is reorganised

Rules & local risks

Tidal Humber, Pennine rivers and the Oil Storage Regulations

The region sits within the Environment Agency’s Yorkshire area. Hull lies in a low basin below sea level; more than 10,000 properties were damaged in the June 2007 floods, and the £42m Humber: Hull Frontages scheme now protects around 113,000. In 2015, floods hit more than 3,000 properties in Calderdale.

The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001 apply to businesses holding over 201 litres of oil: a 110% bund, protected pipework, and checks after heavy rain near the Humber or a Pennine river.

Our work follows GPP2 guidance and OFTEC practice. You receive a Waste Transfer or Consignment Note for everything removed, and a degassing certificate or Certificate of Disposal for cleaned or scrapped tanks.

Questions

Yorkshire and the Humber tank questions

Can you move a large diesel tank rather than replace it?

Often, if the tank is sound. We drain it, lift it and reposition it inside a compliant bund, as on our 27,500-litre diesel tank relocation in Leeds.

Do you work at ports and chemical sites on the Humber?

Yes. We are used to permits to work, inductions and restricted hot work, and cold cutting lets us dismantle tanks where sparks are not acceptable.

What causes sludge and diesel bug in stored fuel?

Condensation puts water in the bottom of a tank, and microbes grow where fuel and water meet, causing sludge and blocked filters. Cleaning the tank and polishing the fuel deals with it; regular checks stop it returning.

What paperwork do we get after a tank is removed?

A Waste Transfer Note, or Consignment Note for hazardous waste, plus a Certificate of Disposal for a scrapped tank. Cleaned tanks get a degassing certificate.

Can homeowners in North Yorkshire get help too?

Commercial sites are our main work, but we can replace or install a domestic oil tank as well. Details are on our home heating oil tank page.
