Oil and fuel tank work for businesses inthe West Midlands

Britteco cleans, removes, foam fills and decommissions commercial oil and fuel tanks across the West Midlands, from Birmingham and Solihull to Hereford, Shrewsbury and the Vale of Evesham. The work is run from our Banbury HQ, covering logistics parks, engineering works and off-grid farms.

What makes the West Midlands different

Industrial core, rural Marches

The conurbation around Birmingham sits where the M5, M6 and M42 meet. Rail-linked logistics sites such as Hams Hall in north Warwickshire and the West Midlands Interchange at Four Ashes in Staffordshire sit alongside car plants at Castle Bromwich and Solihull.

Head west and the picture changes. At the 2021 Census, 16.2% of Herefordshire households and 15.0% in Shropshire relied on oil alone for heating, roughly five times the regional figure of 3.0%. Livestock farms, cider makers such as Bulmers in Hereford and Vale of Evesham growers keep kerosene and gas oil in bulk, often well away from the gas grid.

Manufacturing sits between the two, led by JCB at Rocester in Staffordshire, with generators, process boilers and workshop waste oil systems needing regular attention.

  • Generator and DERV tanks at Birmingham-area logistics parks
  • Heating oil and gas oil storage on Herefordshire and Shropshire farms
  • Process and workshop tanks at engineering and vehicle plants
  • Basement and buried tanks beneath older town buildings

How we work in the West Midlands

Survey first, then plan the work

We visit the site in person whenever photos are not enough to price the job.

  1. Share the detailsPhotos, tank capacity and fuel type let us gauge the job quickly. Mention restricted access, such as a basement plant room or farm track.
  2. Visit if neededWhen a visit is needed, we check the bund, pipe runs and remaining fuel before agreeing a method statement.
  3. Do the workFuel is decanted into bunded containers, then the tank is cleaned, cut up or foam filled. Busy production and logistics sites can keep running around us.
  4. Hand over recordsWaste Transfer or Consignment Notes go to you on completion, with degassing or disposal certificates where they apply.

Rules & local risks

The Severn, rural storage and your legal duties

The whole region falls within the Environment Agency’s West Midlands area. The River Severn, the UK’s longest river, runs through Shropshire and Worcestershire; Shrewsbury’s Frankwell district flooded three times in six weeks in autumn 2000, and the town saw major flooding again during Storm Henk in January 2024.

Under the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001, any business holding over 201 litres of oil needs a bund of at least 110% of tank capacity and fittings protected from damage. Tanks near rivers or on floodplains deserve extra scrutiny, because rising water can lift a light tank or overtop a bund.

We work to GPP2 and OFTEC standards. Each job is documented with a Waste Transfer or Consignment Note, and a degassing certificate or Certificate of Disposal where a tank is cleaned out or scrapped.

Questions

West Midlands tank questions

Can a tank in a basement be dealt with?

Yes. If a tank cannot be brought out through the building, we drain it, clean and degas it, then fill it with foam so it is inert. You receive a certificate confirming the decommissioning for your records.

Our farm is off the gas grid and the oil tank is ageing. What do you recommend?

Start with an inspection of the tank, bund and supports. If the steel is thinning or a plastic tank is cracking, a bunded replacement removes the risk of a slow leak, and we take the old tank away on the same visit.

Our site is near the Severn. Does flood risk change anything?

It can. A floodplain tank should be bunded, secured and kept above likely water levels, with bunds checked for rainwater after heavy weather.

Do you handle waste oil from workshops?

We collect waste oil and contaminated fuel from workshops, plant yards and garages, with a Consignment Note for hazardous waste.

How is a Birmingham job planned?

We start from photos, tank capacity and fuel type, then book a date that suits the site and bring everything the work needs on one visit. For fuel that cannot wait, our emergency diesel and heating oil delivery operates around the clock.
