The city-region in briefHardly any oil heating, a great deal of stored diesel
The 2021 Census found just 2,122 oil-heated homes among 1,178,240 households in the ten boroughs, about 0.18%. The tanks we see belong to factories, depots, hospitals, offices and data halls, holding white diesel for fleets, gas oil for boilers and plant, and fuel for generators that must start the moment the grid fails.
Trafford Park, the world’s first planned industrial estate, still holds around 1,400 companies and 40,000 jobs beside the Manchester Ship Canal, and Equinix and Pulsant run data centres there. Manchester Airport at Ringway handled about 32.1 million passengers in 2025, Port Salford at Barton has operated as a freight interchange since 2016, and the Heinz plant at Kitt Green in Wigan is one of Europe’s largest food factories.
Redevelopment never stops. Mills, warehouses, bus garages and old petrol stations are converted or cleared, and site surveys keep finding tanks nobody recorded: steel in a mill basement, a buried tank under a car park, a boiler-house tank in a council block. Each must be emptied and made safe before building starts.
- Generator fuel polishing for hospitals, data centres and telecoms rooms
- Diesel tank cleaning at bus, coach and haulage depots
- Tank decommissioning on mill, petrol station and brownfield sites
- Clean diesel for yard shunters and sprinkler pumps at distribution sheds
