Britteco inspects, replaces and removes oil and diesel tanks for farms, villages, ports and chemical sites across the East Riding, from Beverley and Driffield to Goole and Bridlington. Northern jobs are run from our Harrogate base in North Yorkshire, and businesses on the edge of Hull are covered by the same team.
Outside Hull, the East Riding is a county of villages and farmsteads, many never connected to mains gas. In 2021, 5.8% of households here relied on oil alone, against 0.03% inside the city of Hull. So the kerosene tanks stand on Wolds farms, in Holderness villages and beside the holiday parks of the Bridlington and Hornsea coast.
The Humber bank tells a different story. Saltend Chemicals Park, just beyond Hull’s eastern boundary, hosts acetic acid, ammonia and bioethanol plants beside a 1,200 MW gas-fired power station, and Easington has brought North Sea gas ashore since 1967. Upriver, Goole calls itself Britain’s largest inland port, and the Goole36 and Capitol Park sites at junction 36 of the M62 hold sheds where yard shunters and standby generators burn stored diesel.
Public services add more. Castle Hill Hospital at Cottingham keeps generator fuel in reserve, the Defence School of Transport at Leconfield runs around 1,300 vehicles, and council highway depots and leisure centres often hold bulk diesel or boiler oil. Haulage yards, agricultural contractors and village petrol stations complete the picture.
Inspection is where most East Riding enquiries start, so these steps follow a survey through to any repair or replacement.
Ordered by what we are asked for most here.
Run out of heating oil or diesel in the East Riding of Yorkshire?
24/7 emergency heating oil, kerosene and diesel delivery from 100 litres, including nights, weekends and bank holidays.
The East Riding falls within the Environment Agency’s Yorkshire area. Its chalk Wolds hold a principal aquifer of national importance that feeds the River Hull and supplies drinking water, farms and industry; past pumping has already drawn salty water into the chalk beneath Hull. A slow drip from a split kerosene tank on the Wolds can reach that groundwater.
Flooding arrives from rain, rivers and the tide. In June 2007 two square miles of Hessle went under and dozens of Beverley homes were evacuated, and the December 2013 surge flooded Hessle Foreshore. Goole’s docks carry their own River Ouse flood warning, while the Holderness cliffs retreat by around two metres a year. Tanks here need anchoring, with vents and fill points above likely flood levels.
A business keeping more than 201 litres of oil must meet the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001: secondary containment of at least 110% and protected valves, gauges and fill pipes. We leave a survey report or, after removal, waste notes and a certificate of disposal or degassing.
From the Humber bank to the Holderness coast, these are some of the places we work.
Yes. We survey oil and diesel tanks across the East Riding, including Hull’s fringe at Hessle, Cottingham and Hedon. The inspection covers the shell, bund, base, pipework and gauges, and you get a written report to pass to your insurer.
If it is single-skin, has no bund or shows rust along the seams, replacement is usually the better spend. A sound bunded tank may have years left, so we inspect first and quote for a replacement only if the report says it is due.
Yes. The underground tanks are emptied, cleaned and certified gas-free before anyone cuts or digs. Where a tank can come out we lift it and backfill; under a canopy or roadside we fill it with foam or sand instead. The forecourt interceptor is usually cleaned on the same visit.
Tank size and type, how much oil and sludge is left in the old one, the base, access and the state of the supply line. Send photos and your yearly usage and we will quote a fixed figure that includes taking the old tank away.
We can, though most of our work is commercial. Read about domestic oil tank removal and replacement to see how a home job is handled, then call us with a few photos.
Our Harrogate team also looks after these neighbouring areas.
Tell us where the tank stands, what it holds and how old it is. We will book an inspection and, if a new tank is due, quote for the swap.
