Commercial fuel tank removal and carein South Yorkshire

Britteco removes, decommissions and cleans fuel tanks for manufacturers, logistics hubs and brownfield sites in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley. Our engineers travel down from the Harrogate base to work on steelworks, logistics yards and ex-colliery redevelopments.

South Yorkshire at a glance

Steel, advanced manufacturing and big logistics hubs

Steelmaking still shapes the county. Stocksbridge has more than 160 years of steel history and Rotherham runs a strip mill at Brinsworth. Alongside them, Rotherham’s Advanced Manufacturing Park covers more than 150 acres with tenants such as Rolls-Royce, Boeing and McLaren, and Sheffield’s Innovation District is home to the university’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre.

Freight has grown fast. iPort Doncaster, by junction 3 of the M18, is one of the UK’s largest multimodal logistics hubs with its own rail terminal, and Gateway 36 at Barnsley has replaced the old Rockingham Colliery next to the M1. Sites like these run diesel for yard plant, fleets and fire pumps.

Domestic oil is rare: just 0.48% of households across the four districts, peaking at 0.89% in Doncaster. Our South Yorkshire work is therefore mostly industrial, and much of it is on brownfield land where old tanks turn up during redevelopment.

  • Industrial tanks removed and cut up on brownfield and colliery land
  • Fuel polishing for generators and fire-pump tanks
  • Underground tanks decommissioned with foam or sand fill
  • Diesel cleaning for logistics yards on the M1 and M18
How we work in South Yorkshire

Dealing with industrial and buried tanks

South Yorkshire jobs often involve large tanks and sites with a long industrial history.

  1. Find out what is thereOld works and colliery sites sometimes hide tanks no one has records for. We help identify the tank, its likely contents and safe access before quoting.
  2. Empty and testFuel, water and sludge are pumped out and sampled where needed. Usable diesel can be transferred, and the rest goes for licensed disposal.
  3. Remove or decommissionTanks we can get at are cleaned, gas-freed and cold cut where they stand. Buried tanks that cannot come out are cleaned and filled with foam, sand or concrete.
  4. Document everythingWe issue consignment notes and a disposal or degassing certificate so the site file is complete for buyers, planners and the Environment Agency.

Rules & local risks

The Don valley floods, and the 2001 Regulations

South Yorkshire is in the Environment Agency’s Yorkshire area. The Don runs through Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster, joined by the Rother and the Dearne. In November 2019 the Don reached record levels at Doncaster: Fishlake and Bentley were evacuated, floodwater surrounded Meadowhall, and the Don and Rother burst their banks around Rotherham Central station. Tanks on low riverside industrial land need sound bunds and secure fittings.

Every South Yorkshire business with more than 201 litres of oil on site falls under the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001. That means a sound tank, a bund of 110% capacity and protected fill and draw-off points, and GPP2 guidance covers siting near drains and rivers.

When a tank is removed or decommissioned, we provide waste transfer or consignment notes and a certificate of disposal or degassing certificate. On brownfield schemes these papers often form part of the planning and land-quality record.

Questions

South Yorkshire tank questions

We found an old tank during groundworks. What now?

Stop work around it and keep it sealed. We can identify what it held, pump out any fuel, water or sludge, then remove it or clean and fill it in place, and provide the certificates your planning or land-quality report needs.

Is it removal or decommissioning for a buried tank?

If the excavation is open or the ground is coming up anyway, removal is usually simpler. Where the tank sits under a building, road or slab, decommissioning by cleaning and foam, sand or concrete fill avoids major breaking out.

Our generator fuel has turned dark and cloudy. Can it be saved?

Usually it can. Dark, cloudy diesel normally has water and diesel bug in it. Polishing filters out the water and solids, and if the bottom of the tank is heavily sludged we clean it too.

Are tanks near the Don at higher risk?

Riverside sites in Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster have flooded before, most recently on a large scale in November 2019. A sound bund, closed valves and an anchored tank reduce the chance of fuel escaping in a flood.

How do you plan a South Yorkshire job?

Our engineers come from the Harrogate base. Most jobs are scoped from photos and tank details, then booked for an agreed date, with the pumps, tanker and cutting kit brought in on the one visit. If a works or depot runs short of fuel, our 24/7 emergency diesel and heating oil delivery can cover the gap.
