Sunderland in brief

Factories on the Wear and farmland on the edge

Sunderland homes almost never use heating oil: the 2021 Census counted 144 oil-only households out of 122,177 in the city. Our work here is commercial, for manufacturers, logistics firms, public buildings and the farms that still ring the city.

Wearside is one of the busiest manufacturing areas in the North East. The car plant and supplier parks around Washington and the new advanced manufacturing park run fleets, forklifts and standby generators on stored diesel, while the older industrial land at Pallion, Hylton Riverside and Southwick has plenty of yards where tanks were installed decades ago. Doxford International Business Park, Sunderland Royal Hospital and the university add offices and buildings that rely on generator fuel.

The city boundary also takes in open country around Houghton-le-Spring, Hetton-le-Hole and Ryhope. Farms there keep red diesel for tractors and machinery, and old tanks in barns and on steel stands are often left long after they stop being used. Our published Sunderland case study was one of those farms.

  • Farm diesel tank removal and dismantling
  • Diesel tank cleaning for factory, fleet and courier yards
  • Generator fuel polishing for the hospital, offices and data rooms
  • Tank decommissioning on cleared riverside and industrial land

How a Sunderland job runs

Planned visits with the paperwork included

Whether it is a factory yard or a farm barn, the job follows the same four steps.

  1. Photos and contentsTell us what is stored in the tank and send photos of it, its stand or bund and the route in. That decides the pumps, tanker and lifting gear.
  2. Method and timingWe send RAMS and agree a slot around production shifts, deliveries or the farming calendar, so work does not get in the way.
  3. Clean, empty or dismantleFuel worth keeping is polished; sludge, water and old diesel go into our tanker. Redundant tanks are de-gassed, cold cut and taken away.
  4. Sign-offConsignment notes, a degassing certificate and a certificate of disposal are sent to you once the work is done.

Rules & local risks

Limestone underfoot and the Wear running through

Much of Sunderland sits on the magnesian limestone, an important aquifer in the North East, and the River Wear cuts through the city to the sea. Oil lost from a split tank or a leaking hose can reach groundwater or the river, so the Environment Agency’s North East area expects oil stores to be properly contained and looked after.

Businesses storing more than 201 litres of oil come under the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001, and farms storing agricultural fuel have their own rules. In both cases a sound tank inside a bund of at least 110% of its capacity is the starting point, and old tanks on open stands rarely meet it.

Every visit ends with Waste Transfer or Consignment Notes for what we take away, plus a degassing certificate and certificate of disposal for any tank that is removed.

Questions

Sunderland tank questions

Who does fuel tank cleaning near me in Sunderland?

Britteco cleans commercial fuel and oil tanks across Sunderland and Washington. Our northern team plans each job from Harrogate and brings the tanker, pumps and cleaning kit needed.

We have old diesel tanks in a farm building. Can you take them away?

Yes. We pump out what is left, clean and de-gas the tanks, then dismantle them and any stands they sit on, as we did on our Sunderland farm job.

Our factory generator fuel has been sitting for years. Is it still usable?

Often it can be saved. We test and polish the diesel to remove water and contamination, clean the tank, and only dispose of fuel that cannot be recovered.

Do you work on hospital, school or council sites?

Yes. We provide RAMS in advance and plan work around opening hours and site rules.

How much does tank cleaning or removal cost in Sunderland?

It depends on the tank size, the contents, access and how much dismantling is needed. Send photos and the capacity and we will give a fixed price.
