Britteco cleans diesel and gas oil tanks, polishes generator fuel and decommissions redundant fuel stores for factories, depots, hospitals and riverside sites in Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead and the Shields. Our crews are sent from the Harrogate base with the tanker, pumps and cutting kit each job needs.
Home heating oil barely features here. The 2021 Census found 585 oil-only households among almost 500,000 in the five boroughs, or 0.12%. The tanks in Tyne and Wear belong to businesses and public bodies instead, holding diesel for generators, fleets and plant, gas oil for boilers and process heat, and waste oil from workshops.
Manufacturing is strongest on Wearside. Nissan’s Sunderland plant is the UK’s largest car factory, and the International Advanced Manufacturing Park next to it houses suppliers and AESC’s battery gigafactory expansion. The Port of Sunderland handles oil and petroleum among its cargoes, while the Port of Tyne moves around 526,000 cars a year through two terminals and runs bulk quays, a cruise terminal and the North Shields ferry. Gateshead’s Team Valley, opened in 1939, holds about 700 firms.
Transport and public services carry big fuel stores. One Gateshead bus depot, built on the site of the old Dunston Power Station, holds 140,000 litres of diesel. The Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital in Newcastle depend on standby generators, as does the data centre campus at Cobalt Business Park. Along both rivers, closed yards and works often leave buried tanks behind when land is cleared for new uses.
Our published Tyne and Wear case study is a farm job on the edge of Sunderland.

Run out of heating oil or diesel in Tyne and Wear?
24/7 emergency heating oil, kerosene and diesel delivery from 100 litres, including nights, weekends and bank holidays.
Tyne and Wear sits in the Environment Agency’s North East area, with the tidal Tyne and Wear running through its centres and the Derwent and Team joining from the south. Sunderland draws part of its drinking water from the Magnesian Limestone through eight groundwater stations, so a spill on Wearside can threaten a public supply as well as a river.
Flash floods are the local hazard. On 28 June 2012, remembered as Thunder Thursday, Newcastle’s Central Motorway went under, the Metrocentre and Eldon Square closed, Heworth in Gateshead was among the worst-hit areas and around 50 houses flooded in West Monkseaton. Basement plant rooms and low yards with fuel tanks need vents and fill points kept above that kind of surface water.
Any business holding more than 201 litres of oil is bound by the 2001 oil storage regulations: a bund taking at least 110% of the tank’s contents, with gauges, valves and fill pipes protected. Every Tyne and Wear job ends with waste transfer or consignment notes and the cleaning, degassing or disposal certificate that matches the work.
We cover all five boroughs, including these towns and cities.
Britteco cleans commercial diesel, gas oil and heating oil tanks across Sunderland and Washington, including generator day tanks and bulk stores. Engineers come from our Harrogate base with a tanker and polishing kit, so most cleans are finished in a single visit.
It at least needs testing. Diesel that sits for long periods gathers condensation, and that water lets diesel bug grow and block filters on start-up. We sample it, then polish the fuel and clean the generator fuel tank if the sample shows water or sludge.
We drain the tank and its pipework, remove the sludge, clean and gas-free it, and then either cut it out or fill it with foam where it sits. You receive a degassing or disposal certificate, which developers and solicitors ask for before land changes hands.
Yes. Underground petrol and diesel tanks are emptied, made gas-free and certified before excavation, then lifted out or filled in place. The forecourt interceptor is cleaned as well, and all waste leaves under consignment notes.
Very few homes here use oil, but we can still help. See our guide to old oil tank disposal at home for how a domestic job works.
Our northern crews also work in these areas.
Send the tank size, what it holds and a photo of the fill point and bund. We will suggest a method and a date that keeps your site running.
