Oil tank replacement in Banbury
A single-skin steel heating oil tank replaced with a new 900-litre steel bunded tank, with kerosene transferred, the fuel line extended and the old tank removed.
The brief
A new tank.
A new position.
The existing single-skin steel oil tank stood at the rear of the property. The brief was to replace it with a 900-litre steel bunded tank in a new position behind the car port, using a concrete slab prepared before our visit.
The job also required connection to a fuel line already buried in a trench, an additional approximately 5–7 metres of pipework, and transfer of the remaining kerosene into the replacement tank. The redundant steel tank was to be removed once the replacement was in place.
This case study describes the work recorded for this Banbury project. The tank position, base and fuel line arrangements for another site need their own assessment.

The work
Tank, fuel and pipework.
The replacement combined tank positioning, fuel handling and reconnection of the supply line. These parts of the job were planned together.
Position the tank
A HIAB crane lorry lifted the new tank over a roughly four-foot hedge and placed it on the prepared concrete slab in the new location.
Connect the fuel line
The team connected to the existing buried line and extended the run along the bottom course of the car port brickwork. An inspection chamber was provided at the fuel line joint, as shown in the project photographs.
Transfer and remove
Kerosene was transferred from the old tank into the replacement, then the redundant single-skin steel tank was removed for disposal.

Fuel line connection
Connecting the
new position.
The existing underground fuel line was retained as part of the brief. The new extension followed the lower brickwork beside the car port, connecting the replacement tank to that supply route.
The project record also notes a small fuel-line leak identified afterwards and rectified on a return visit. We include that follow-up as part of the recorded job.

Project photographs

These photographs show the inspection chamber, removal of the old steel tank and the heating oil system connection.

Vehicle registrations, identifying label details and embedded location metadata have been removed or concealed in the website copies.
The result
A replacement tank,
with the old one removed.
The project record confirms installation of the new tank and disposal of the redundant steel tank, with a disposal certificate documented. The new tank replaced the previous single-skin storage arrangement in a different position on the prepared base.

What affects the scope of an oil tank replacement?
Tank capacity and construction, remaining fuel, the proposed base and location, the pipe route and vehicle access all affect the work. This project required a new tank position and a fuel line extension as well as removal of the old tank.
Can the existing fuel be transferred into the new tank?
Kerosene transfer formed part of this Banbury job. For another site, the fuel condition, quantity and transfer arrangements need to be assessed before agreeing the work.
