Fuel and oil tank specialistsfor Berkshire

From standby diesel at Slough data centres to heating oil on West Berkshire farms, Britteco cleans, maintains and decommissions fuel tanks in Reading, Newbury, Bracknell and beyond. Each tank is tested, cleaned or decommissioned to a written plan, with the waste paperwork and certificates handed over at the end.

Two Berkshires

Urban standby diesel in the east, oil-heated farmland in the west

Berkshire splits sharply. In Reading and Slough the 2021 Census found just 0.1% of homes heated by oil alone. In West Berkshire the figure is 12.0%, among the highest in the South East. The county average of 2.8% hides two very different kinds of tank work.

In the east the tanks are about resilience. The Slough Trading Estate data-centre cluster depends on standby generators, each with bulk diesel storage and a day tank that must start first time. Logistics yards at Colnbrook and Poyle beside Heathrow run fleets and forklifts on white diesel and gas oil. Here, oil tank maintenance, fuel testing and cleaning keep the backup reliable.

Out west it is farms, stables and business parks. Lambourn’s racehorse training yards, arable holdings on the Downs and units at Newbury and Greenham Business Park all store kerosene or red diesel, often in older steel tanks. Those are the sites where we see rust, water in the tank and the occasional leaking base.

How we work in Berkshire

Planned around uptime and the working day

On larger jobs we visit the site before quoting, so the plan fits around backup power and daily operations.

  1. Agree the windowData centres and logistics sites rarely stop, so we agree a time slot, permits and a fuel plan that keeps generators covered. On farms and yards we work around feeding, racing and harvest.
  2. Test and assessWe sample the diesel or heating oil, check for water and sludge and look at the tank shell, bund and pipework. That tells us whether cleaning, polishing or replacement makes sense.
  3. Do the workFuel is pumped out and held in a clean tank or IBC, then the tank is cleaned, de-gassed or decommissioned. Where a tank leaves site we cold cut it into sections rather than using heat.
  4. Close it outYou get a written job record with the Waste Transfer or Consignment Note and any degassing certificate. Data-centre teams can add these straight to maintenance logs and audit files.

Rules & local risks

Chalk, the Kennet and the Thames

All of Berkshire falls within the Environment Agency’s Thames area. The Thames, Kennet, Loddon and Blackwater run through it, and the Berkshire Downs sit on a chalk aquifer that supports the West Berkshire Groundwater Scheme. Chalk lets spilled oil move down to groundwater with little to stop it, so a weeping tank on a downland farm is a real pollution risk.

The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001 apply to any business storing over 201 litres of oil, data centres included. Tanks need secondary containment of at least 110%, protected pipework and fill points inside the bund. GPP2 guidance adds advice on siting tanks away from drains and watercourses.

Britteco is OFTEC registered, ISO 9001:2015 certified and CHAS accredited. After cleaning, decommissioning or removal you receive the consignment paperwork for the waste and a degassing certificate or Certificate of Disposal for the tank.

Questions

Berkshire tank questions

How often should a data-centre generator tank be cleaned?

It depends on fuel turnover, but stored diesel that sits for long periods gathers water and sludge. Regular sampling shows when cleaning or polishing is due. We can set a schedule from the first test results.

Can you work without taking our backup power offline?

Usually, yes. We can polish fuel while the tank stays in service, or arrange temporary storage so the generator remains fuelled during cleaning. The plan is agreed with your facilities team beforehand.

We have an old steel tank at a racing yard in Lambourn. What are the options?

We inspect it first. If the shell is sound it may only need cleaning and a proper bund. If it is corroded or leaking, we drain it, cut it up and take it away, then fit a bunded replacement if you still need one.

Is red diesel on a farm covered by the oil storage rules?

On farms, agricultural fuel oil storage follows separate regulations from the 2001 business rules. The principles are similar: sound tanks, containment and care near water. We can advise on what applies to your site.

What happens if a Berkshire site needs fuel urgently?

Emergency diesel and heating oil delivery runs 24/7, in volumes from 100 litres upwards. For cleaning or removal work, we review photos of the tank, book a date and bring everything needed to finish in one visit.
