Oil tank removal & decommissioning in Northumberland

Plan commercial oil tank removal, cleaning, installation, inspections or decommissioning for your Northumberland site. See our completed foam filling project at North Sunderland Harbour in Seahouses, where a buried tank was prepared and filled in place.

Completed work · Seahouses

A harbour tank.
Decommissioned in place.

At North Sunderland Harbour in Seahouses, Britteco dealt with a buried fuel tank estimated to hold up to 3,000 litres.

The work took place in two stages. The tank was emptied and prepared first, then foam-filled in place and the access secured. The tank was not excavated or removed.

The published case study shows why access and the chosen end state matter when planning work on redundant underground storage.

Find the right method for your tank

Removal, cleaning & filling in place

Removing a redundant tank and leaving a prepared tank filled in place are different outcomes. Start with the site, tank condition and future use of the land so the options can be assessed.

Oil tank removal & disposal

Plan above-ground or underground tank removal, including remaining fuel, safe preparation, lifting or dismantling and waste handling.

Oil tank removal →

Tank decommissioning

Agree how to take redundant fuel storage out of service and what condition the site needs to be left in.

Tank decommissioning →

Foam & void filling

Discuss filling a suitably prepared tank where leaving it in place is appropriate after site, environmental and structural assessment.

Foam filling →

Diesel & fuel tank cleaning

Remove sludge, water and residues as part of maintenance or an agreed decommissioning scope.

Tank cleaning →

Waste fuel disposal

Arrange the uplift and disposal of unwanted or contaminated fuel as part of the planned work.

Waste fuel disposal →

Fuel tank inspection & testing

Discuss the condition of an existing tank and whether maintenance or replacement is the appropriate next step.

Tank inspections →

Oil tank installation & replacement

Plan a new or replacement commercial fuel tank, including capacity, base, pipework, access and commissioning requirements. Share your postcode so we can discuss arrangements.

Tank installation & replacement →

Diesel fuel polishing

Discuss filtration of stored diesel affected by water and particulate contamination, including standby generator fuel. Fuel condition and tank condition determine the appropriate scope.

Coastal sites, rural properties & working facilities

For a project in Seahouses, Alnwick, Morpeth, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Hexham, Blyth or elsewhere in Northumberland, send your postcode and tank details to discuss arrangements.

Tell us about the tank position, vehicle access, surface above any buried tank and the site’s day-to-day use. At a working harbour or other operational site, access and scheduling need to be agreed with the site team.

Our team travels to the project location. Contact us to confirm the scope and scheduling for your site.

What to send us

  • Site postcode and photographs.
  • Approximate capacity, tank material and stored product.
  • Remaining fuel and known condition issues.
  • Access restrictions and whether removal or continued use is intended.

Northumberland tank service questions

Where was your Northumberland project?

It was at North Sunderland Harbour in Seahouses, Northumberland. The full case study includes the real project photographs and the two stages of work.

Can an underground tank be filled instead of removed?

Sometimes, following a site-specific assessment and appropriate preparation. The Seahouses project used foam filling in place. It does not mean the same method is suitable for every buried tank.

Does foam filling remove contamination from the surrounding ground?

No. Filling a tank is not a substitute for assessing or addressing contamination outside it. Known leaks or suspected contamination must be included in the project brief.

How much does oil tank removal or decommissioning cost?

Capacity, remaining contents, access, preparation, excavation or lifting, waste handling and the chosen method affect the quotation. Send photographs and tank details so we can discuss the scope.

Can you replace a tank rather than decommission the whole system?

Discuss your ongoing fuel requirements with the team. See our London tank services page for a documented 9,200-litre replacement and new underground fuel line.
